Super Round Box

Where it All Began
Before the birth of Super Round box, there was an event called Round box, initiated by the Hybrid Formz crew. This monthly event was a small breaking competition with only local breakers. In 2005 we did not imagine that our monthly jam would become an event this big! Having only one source to promote the event, www.Ozbboy.com, Round Box was a small event but it led on to greater things.
Where did the name come from?
The name ROUND BOX came into existence when we were looking for a new crew name. The process was simple; each person wrote two names on a piece of paper and put it into a hat so it could be pulled out randomly. We had a few funny ones like “Full Hobbos” and “Compact Legos” (which we used as crew names at smaller events). When ‘Round Box ‘came up we were all like WTF is Round Box? — It was catchy so from thereon the name was used for our monthly jam/comp. When Round Box had a chance to grow, it was decided to be called SUPER ROUND BOX for obvious reasons…

First SUPER ROUND BOX 2005!!!
In December 2005, the first Super Round Box was held at Bankstown PCYC. It was organised as part of the PCYC Blue Star Leadership Program where Van Khai Ngo (Kronic) as a Youth Participant needed to implement a project at his Club. Khai's passion was dancing and had already done monthly events so he saw this as a great opportunity to grow. This event, consisted of breaking battles and Hip Hop Showcases, it was a modest success, attracting an audience of over 200 people who were from all over Sydney. Fortunately, the night before had been the premiere of Seven Shadows and we had some interstate guests compete in the event too.
The winners of breaking comp were Cactus; bboys from Perth and Melbourne: (Natty, Ippy, Beni Benz and Mousa). The runners up were Blackout; bboys from New Zealand and Sydney (Rush, Weras, Ty and Lil E). Winner of the Popping comp was Lama and Future, runners up were Yun and Hirotaka (Hush Puppies). Props to the Breaking judges Lamaroc (Fresh Sox), Future (NZ) and Willa.Str8 (Foolish Crew, Japan). Dj for the night was Mathmatics - props for being our first DJ!!!! Also Popping judges all from Hybrid Formz - Danis Kool, Bass6 and Skid.
Round Box 2006 feat Bboy Born
In November 2006, Round Box was held again in partnership with Jeremy from Ozbboy.com. With more experience behind them, the organisers were able to hold another event, this time featuring international judge Bboy Born, from Korea. The eventual winner was Mousa from Fresh sox who defeated his fellow crew member Rush in a tight final. It was a memorable 1 v 1 comp because at the time they didn't happen so often.
Props to Judges: Taz (HFz), Lamaroc (Fresh Sox, VIC) and Born (Rivers, Korea)
From here comes Super Round Box II 2007
SRBII was a massive success with over 500 people attending the event. This was the first time that we had organized an event of this scale, we had a committee of at least 12 people to assist in organizing, eventually it was a handful who did most of the work. Nonetheless it was a success because of everyone's contribution.
We had 11 Breaking crews from South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and of course crews from all around NSW competing and 7 Hip-Hop showcase crews from NSW competed on the day. The winners of the breaking comp were Queensland Power (S@W) who defeated Bankstown's very own Hybrid Formz in the final. There were a few intense battles through the night; Fresh Sox vs Hybrid Formz and SKB vs Step Kiddz to name a few!!
The winner of the Hip-Hop showcase comp was Psalms who dazzled everyone with their finesse! Second place went to Final Reduction and third place went to Enerjetix. The night was awesome and it definitely lifted the profile of SRB. For the first time we went outside of Bankstown PCYC and had it at a larger venue. After SRB - Bankstown Town Hall (Venue) announced its closure and made it very hard for us to continue our project, however we continued because things changed at the end of 2007…
Props to the Breaking Judges: Red ($7, ACC), Terry (RAW,Korea) and King Ippy (Zou Rock, W.A.), Hip-Hop: Katrina, Aiden and Jo. Djs on the night were Matt Fernandez (now Hfz, Melbourne) and Skid (HFz). Also thanks to the MCs - Phreaze and Kamikaze from Juse.
Xmas Round Box 2007
This was the first event we did especially for Christmas, seeing that 2007 was a good new for events in Sydney, we decided to do a fun jam to cap off 2007. Turns out we did it right according to people who attended and competed. It had a fun atmosphere and felt like a jam. There were some good battles and some good cypheres. Winner of the Breaking comp on the night was Fat Formz (Rush, Cole and Taz) who defeated Watto's Big Red Monsta (self explanatory the people in that crew…). Winner of the Popping comp was Yuki and Adam and runners up were Jack and Keanu.
Big thank you to the Breaking judges: Davo (NBD), Martin (HFz) and Hideboo (ACC & RAW), Popping judges, Albert, Popping Romeo and Chux. Finally props to the Djs on the night - Skid (HFz) and Danis Kool (HFz), played some sick beats that everyone enjoyed on the night.
Winter Round Box 2008
This event was done similarly to Xmas Round Box in 2007, it had the fun and jam atmosphere. All the battles on the night were exhibitions thanks to the dancers who were willing - there was also a guest performance from the Older Women's Network Drumming Crew - those who were there witnessed something truly unique to the culture. Also for the first time we introduced Spin comps to Round Box and possibly Sydney/Australia? These were the results:
Backspin - Shahin (Canada) 9.5 spins
Most Windmills in 10 seconds - Watto (SKB) - 20
Most Head drills - Luke (SKB) - 3
Most Handhops - Lowe (SKB)- 59
Most Flares - Lowe (SKB)- 22
Most Bum spins - Luke (SKB)- 8
Most 1990's - Luke (SKB)- 3.5
Most 2000's - Tony (HFz)- 3
We're hoping that these records will be broken at SRBIII in September. We also want to do more Winter Round Box because of the atmosphere it creates - we've had a lot of good feedback from Winter RB and Xmas RB… Finally props to DJs Matt Fernandez, Libre and Kid Koma for providing the beats on the night.
